Live Nation and The Varsity Theater presents The Chameleons

Seeing The Chameleons at Varsity Theater was a genuinely unique experience—one that felt like a band returning to prove they’ve still got it. And they absolutely do.
From the jump, they opened not with music, but with a brief memorial acknowledging recent events in Minnesota, along with their clear distaste for the current political climate. It set a reflective and serious tone before a single note was played.
Once the music began, it was immediately clear I was watching legends of underground music. The energy, stage presence, and lighting all screamed experience—they’ve done this before, and they know exactly how to command a room. As they worked through their set, they featured several tracks from their latest album, Arctic Moon, while also breaking into impromptu covers of iconic songs like Rebel Rebel and Eleanor Rigby.
One of the most powerful moments came when they referenced a war-related message posted by the president on social media, expressing uncertainty about the state of the world. Seamlessly, they transitioned into Feels Like the End of the World. The performance felt like a genuine cry to the world—a statement from artists who still deeply care about what they create. One line that stood out in particular was: “All of us can read the signs of the sky and earth: How is it that we can’t read the signs of the times?”
Toward the end of the set, something felt off—they walked offstage without playing some of their biggest early hits. But just as that realization set in, they returned and delivered a powerful encore featuring Swamp Thing, Don’t Fall, and Monkeyland.
Watching both younger and older fans come together to see pioneers of the goth-rock/darkwave scene deliver such an energetic and meaningful performance made this a standout show—one that will easily go down as a highlight of the year.
