I finally got a chance to experience the HUGE Mystic Lake Amphitheater when Staind brought their “Break the Cycle” 25th Anniversary Tour to Minnesota, along with supporting acts Hinder, Hoobastank, and Seether on Thursday, September 24, 2026.  Even though it was a cool evening and a light drizzle was falling which was a bit of a bummer, I was excited to check out a sort of mini rock music festival at this new venue!

First up: Hinder.  Hinder got its start in Oklahoma City in 2001 and has been recording and performing ever since. Their original lead singer, Austin John Winkler, left in 2013 to enter rehab and was replaced by Marshall Dutton, joining Joe “Blower” Garvey on lead guitar, Cody Hanson on drums, and Mike Rodden on bass.  As the opening act, Hinder’s set was pretty short, but full of their biggest hits, like “Live Without It”, “Lips of an Angel,” and “Get Stoned.”

Up next was my first time seeing Hoobastank, and wow!  What an energetic show! Hoobastank was formed in 1994 in Agoura Hills, CA by lead singer Doug Robb, guitarist Dan Estrin, drummer Chris Hesse, and bass player Markku Lappalainen.  The band went through a few bass players before recruiting Jesse Charland in 2009.  Like I said, the show Hoobastank brought to Mystic Lake was full of energy and featured as many hits from their 30 year catalog they could pack into a 35-minute set.  “Same Direction,” “Born to Lead,” “Out of Control,” “Running Away,” and of course “The Reason” and “Crawling in the Dark” were fan favorites … it was too short!  I wouldn’t mind seeing Hoobastank again when they are headlining a full-length show.

Thursday night’s number three act was Seether … always a favorite of mine!   Seether was formed in 1999 in South Africa by lead singer and guitarist Shaun Morgan and today features Dale Stewart on bass, John Humphrey on drums, and Corey Lowery on lead guitar.  The band takes its name from the Veruca Salt song “Seether.”  Once again, the set was too short to cover all of their hits from the past 20 years, but they did play some of their biggest chart toppers, as well as some deep tracks.  On this tour, Seether has made an effort to change up their set list from venue to venue, so if you manage to catch another stop on this tour, there’s a good chance you’ll hear a completely different mix of music.  Seether kicked things off with two of their newest singles from 2024: “Judas Mind” and “Lost All Control,” and then worked their way back in time as they played music spanning over 20 years of albums.  Songs like “Wasteland,” “Needles,” “Truth,” and of course some of their most recognizable music: “Fine Again,” “Fake It,” and “Remedy.”

Finally, it was time for the headliner:  Staind. Formed in 1995 in Springfield, MA, the lineup has been fairly stable with lead singer Aaron Lewis, lead guitarist Mike Mushok, and Johnny April on bass since day one. Sal Giancarelli took over on drums in 2011.  The tour was celebrating the 25th anniversary of the album Break The Cycle so we heard a LOT of tracks from that album, including “Open Your Eyes,” “Warm Safe Place,” “Pressure,” “Fade,” – a total of nine tracks from the album!  Of course, plenty of other tracks were mixed in, including “Something to Remind You,” “So Far Away,” and “Raining Again.”  The encore featured one more track from Break the Cycle: “It’s Been Awhile,” and of course the fan favorite 1999’s “Mud Shovel.”   It was a great concert and a great introduction to the new Mystic Lake Amphitheater!
