First Avenue and The Current present Lucius Wildewoman: The Anniversary Tour

Review and photos by Allen Bawek

It was a packed house at First Ave for Lucius. Probably one of the most packed events I’ve seen there in years. For those who don’t know them they’re a band originating from Brooklyn.

Lucius is an indie pop band known for their distinctive sound characterized by rich vocal harmonies and eclectic instrumentation. The band’s debut album, “Wildewoman,” released in 2013, garnered critical acclaim for its blend of folk, rock, and pop elements. Lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig are renowned for their powerful and emotive vocal performances, often described as the centerpiece of Lucius’ music. The album features catchy melodies, intricate arrangements, and introspective lyrics that explore themes of identity, relationships, and personal growth. Lucius has built a reputation for their captivating live performances and continues to evolve their sound with subsequent releases, solidifying their place in the indie music landscape.

The spectacular part about this band to me is that the two front-women (Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe) sing in perfect unison. It’s quite the amazing thing to see let alone hear. With them celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the release of their debut album “Wildewomen” so they played a lot of those songs. It did not disappoint! The energy in First Ave was incredible. So much so that it looked like it was bringing tears to Jess’s (one of the front-women) eyes. They played some of their biggest hits right out the gate. Right away the crowd were singing along at the top of their lungs. One song they played it was even hard to hear them because the crowd was so loud. Such a great show!
