Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers – Uptown Theater – Minneapolis MN – September 26th 2026
Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers brought an evening of accomplished musicianship and musical discovery to Minneapolis on Saturday, Sept. 26, turning the Uptown Theater into an intimate setting for one of contemporary music’s most distinctive piano players.
Hornsby has never been an artist content simply to reproduce his recordings onstage, and this performance was no exception. From the opening “Sticks and Stones,” the concert had the feel of a conversation between musicians—familiar songs serving as starting points for exploration rather than fixed destinations.
The set moved gracefully between newer material and longtime favorites. “Indigo Park” offered a glimpse of Hornsby’s continuing creative interests, while “The Way It Is,” “The Valley Road” and “Mandolin Rain” connected the evening to the catalog that established him as a singular songwriter and pianist.
Hornsby’s playing remained the show’s defining feature. His piano work was at once melodic, technically formidable and adventurous, with improvisational passages giving the songs an added sense of spontaneity. The Noisemakers matched that energy with a confident, responsive performance of their own.
A highlight came with “King of the Hill / Mystery Train,” an unexpected pairing that demonstrated how comfortably Hornsby can move between musical traditions. Rather than treating the evening as a nostalgia trip, the band continually looked for new possibilities within the material.
By the closing notes of “Mandolin Rain,” the performance had established its own rhythm—part concert, part musical conversation, and part improvisational journey. The audience was treated not merely to familiar songs, but to a reminder of what makes live music compelling in the first place: the possibility that something can happen onstage that cannot be duplicated anywhere else.
At the Uptown Theater, Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers delivered precisely that kind of evening—warm, inventive and musically alive.
