Ty Segall at First Ave on 4/20 was the perfect way to spend a Monday night. Getting to the venue at door time there weren’t very many people, but that all changed 10 minutes before the set time. Looking up the venue was packed and the crowd buzzed with excitement for the two acts to come. To be completely honest, I wasn’t too familiar with the opener Mod Lang before the set. I had only listened to their most recent album once before heading to the venue. My main focus was on Ty Segall who I knew from his work with the band Fuzz and production for a bunch of albums I frequently listen to. Going into a show that features an artist who works in production I get excited to see how well the mixing sounds at the venue. In many cases even if it’s a venue that isn’t known for its acoustics the artist will still deliver a high quality set. Being that this show was at First Ave. I knew I was about to hear a great set.

As the lights dimmed and the projector screen rose I wasn’t prepared for what was to come. Mod Lang blew their set out of the water. Immediately the lead singer was moving around bringing energy into a calmed down crowd. Despite a small technical issue Mod Lang handled their set with professionalism resorting to masterful crowd work to make sure their technical difficulties didn’t turn into a disaster. The best way I can explain Mod Lang’s music is if you were to take 70s classic rock and drop it into the modern day. They mixed high energy guitar riffs with solos on every instrument. Minute by minute I began to worry, how was Ty Segall going to follow this set up? After their set Mod Lang stuck around their merch table taking pictures with and signing autographs for fans. Showing their dedication to their fans.

Just as fast as the question popped into my head it was quickly expelled. Ty Segall and his band took the stage. Rather than being front and center Ty was off to one side seemingly letting the music speak for itself. At first I didn’t know if he was going to top Mod Lang, but I was quickly proven wrong. Ty made playing the guitar look effortless. With every song that came he broke out into guitar solos that flowed perfectly. Think of psychedelic indie rock mixed with funk. Then the solo would spread to the other musicians on the stage and it was clear that this was an all star band composed of tight knit members. After an hour and a half of stink faces, guitar solos, and a song about the Salem witch trials the night was over. Leaving me with an experience I will remember for a long time.
