Review by Amie Hansen
The Great Gatsby delivered an impressive blend of spectacle and storytelling. The cast brought energy and depth to Fitzgerald’s classic tale, with Joshua Grosso’s portrayal of Nick Carraway standing out as the evening’s strongest performance. Grosso served as both narrator and emotional anchor, guiding the audience through Gatsby’s world with sincerity, wit, and a compelling stage presence. The principal cast worked well together, balancing the glamour of the Jazz Age with the underlying tension and heartbreak that drive the story.
The production’s stage design was striking, transforming the Orpheum stage into a lavish 1920s landscape filled with opulent parties, elegant costumes, and dynamic choreography. The scenic transitions flowed seamlessly, creating a cinematic feel that enhanced both the grand party scenes and the more intimate moments. Combined with impressive lighting and visual effects, the production successfully captured the excess and allure of Gatsby’s world.
I was equally impressed by the enthusiasm of the Minnesota audience. Theatergoers in our region can sometimes be reserved in their reactions, but this crowd brought a refreshing level of energy and engagement to the performance. Audible gasps, laughter, and spontaneous exclamations emerged at unexpected moments throughout the show, creating a palpable sense of connection among audience members. Rather than being a distraction, these shared reactions enhanced the experience, reinforcing the emotional impact of the story and reminding us that live theater is at its best when it becomes a collective journey.
At its heart, The Great Gatsby remains a story about ambition, love, and the pursuit of an idealized dream. This touring production effectively highlights the contrast between wealth and happiness, showing how the characters’ desires ultimately lead to disappointment and tragedy. While the show embraces Broadway spectacle, it never loses sight of the emotional themes that have made Fitzgerald’s story endure for generations.
