Summer might be winding down, but there are still plenty of great outdoor concerts to experience!  On Friday, August 21, 2026, my daughter Catherine and I headed down the Mississippi to Treasure Island Resort and Casino to take in one of our favorite bands:  Shinedown, along with special guests From Ashes to New along with Coheed & Cambria.  Catherine and I figure we’ve seen Shinedown each at least six times, but for us, they are one of those bands you can see over and over, and never get tired of the experience, so we were really looking forward to this show, especially on a beautiful, warm summer evening!

First up:  From Ashes to New.  From Ashes to New has been around since 2013, founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  Their line up has changed often over the years, with only founding member Matt Brandyberry being the constant. As the opening act, their set was super short (seven songs) but they sure made up for that with energy!   Brandyberry and fellow front man Danny Case roamed the stage and kept the crowd singing along with songs like “Nightmare,” “Drag me,” and “Panic.”  It was a short set, but sweet!

Next up was a band that was new to me: Coheed & Cambria.  Now here’s a band with an interesting back story!  Coheed & Cambria take their name from a pair of characters in some science fiction stories written by Claudio Sanchez, lead guitarist and vocalist, who formed the band back in 1995 in Nyack, NY. So, nobody in the band is named Coheed.  Or Cambria!  All of their albums since then are concept albums following a science fiction theme called The Amory Wars from the stories by Sanchez. Indeed, the graphic above their logo at Treasure Island alluded to that theme with the words “This Is Our War.”  Joining Sanchez on the stage was Travis Stever on guitar and vocals, Josh Eppard on drums, and Zach Cooper on bass.

The band played for just under an hour, so with a music catalog spanning over 20 years, we got just a small taste of their extensive song collection, ranging from songs like “Delirium Trigger” from their first album released in 2002, to more recent music like “Searching for Tomorrow” from their latest album released in 2025.  Coheed & Cambria has been with Shinedown the entire US leg of the tour, and being that this is the last US stop together before both bands head overseas to Europe, it seemed loose and fun.  Their last song was “Welcome Home,” where they were joined on stage by members of both From Ashes to New and Shinedown, though it was hard to tell exactly who joined them on stage since most of them were wearing masks and wigs and playing inflatable guitars!  What fun!

Finally, it was time for Shinedown to hit the stage, and although this is maybe the sixth time I’ve seen them, this is my first time writing a review of one of their shows!  Shinedown came on the scene in 2001, founded by lead singer Brent Smith.  They went through a few lineup changes early on, but have been pretty stable with Smith still on lead vocals, Zach Myers on guitar, Barry Kerch on drums, and Eric Bass on bass.  The touring lineup taking the stage at Treasure Island was slightly different, with Josh Sturm stepping in for Eric Bass on bass (Eric is taking a mental health break), and Zack Mack on piano and keys. Shinedown has had a TON of hits, and even though they played a super long set, they barely scratched their extensive catalog of music!

The concert kicked off with a track from their most recent album, “Safe and Sound,” and then featured some of their biggest hits including “Diamond Eyes,” Devil,” “Bully,” “A Symptom of Being Human,” “Enemies,” “Cut the Cord,” “Monsters” and more!  In a departure for a typical Treasure Island show, Shinedown brought their full stadium pyrotechnics, so all of us concertgoers were treated to a ton of flames, fireballs, and fireworks … it was amazing!  As I mentioned, this was Shinedown’s last US stop before heading overseas, so they mixed things up quite a bit, and things felt loose and fun. At one point, Zach Myers brought out a guitar that he said was from Minneapolis and he needed to return it after that night’s concert, so he wanted to play something special on it, and broke until a solo cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain!” They also mentioned that since they just played in the Twin Cities last year they were going to try to play some songs they didn’t play last year, actually referencing a TikTok video of a woman sitting at a show as the crowd is emptying out, waiting for them to play “45” which they did not play at that show (it’s funny .. watch it here).  So of course, they then had to play “45” at Treasure Island!  I can’t remember hearing that many covers at other Shinedown shows (other than “Simple Man” from Lynyrd Skynyrd, which they did play), but this show featured quite a few.  Besides “Purple Rain” which I already mentioned, Zach also played “Kryptonite” by 3 Doors Down as a tribute to Brad Arnold who passed away from cancer in February.  Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever from Coheed & Cambria joined Shinedown on stage for a cover of the Outfield’s “Your Love” with a bit of “Go Your Own Way” from Fleetwood Mac.

Brent Smith is pretty talkative between songs, and spent quite a bit of time talking about Shinedown’s charitable giving.  This tour they are partnering with City of Hope and have raised over $300,000 to help fight cancer.

The concert started at 9pm, and as the clock approached 11pm, I was amazed they kept playing … and playing … and playing … it was AWESOME!   The concert wrapped up after over TWO HOURS with two of their biggest hits from 2008: “Sound of Madness” and “Second Chance.”  My only disappointment?  Not hearing 2003’s “Fly From the Inside.”  I should have stayed in my seat recording my own TikTok video, saying I was not leaving until they played it.  That way, next time they come back to Minnesota, maybe they’ll play it.  And I’ll be there!
