Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs – Pantages Theater – Minneapolis MN – Juky 7th 2026

Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs open tour with master class in American rock

Sarah Lee Guthrie opened the night with a warm, heartfelt set that complemented the evening’s roots-rock atmosphere and set an inviting tone before the headliners took the stage.

Mike Campbell has never been the kind of guitarist who demands the spotlight. For decades, the longtime musical architect behind Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers built songs from the inside out, favoring taste, melody and emotional precision over flash. On Tuesday night at the Pantages Theatre, Campbell reminded a near-capacity audience that those qualities remain as powerful as ever.

Opening the band’s 2026 summer tour in support of the new album Mission of Mercy, Campbell and The Dirty Knobs delivered a two-hour set that balanced fresh material with the timeless rock-and-roll spirit that has defined Campbell’s career.

From the opening blast of “Vicious Hangover” through new songs including “Let Me Back in My Dream,” “No Regrets,” “More Than Gold,” “Mission of Mercy,” and “Shake These Blues,” the quartet played with the confidence of a band that has grown well beyond its origins as Campbell’s side project. Guitarist Chris Holt added muscular rhythm work and tasteful harmonies, bassist Lance Morrison locked tightly with drummer Steve Ferrone, and Campbell’s unmistakable lead guitar remained the evening’s emotional centerpiece—never overplayed, always saying exactly what the song required.

The new material sounded road-tested rather than obligatory, blending seamlessly with fan favorites “Wicked Mind,” “Good Enough,” “I Still Love You” and the irreverent crowd-pleaser “Fuck That Guy.” Campbell also reached back into the Tom Petty songbook with heartfelt performances of “Even the Losers,” “Don’t Fade on Me,” “Rockin’ Around (With You),” and a rousing encore closer, “You Wreck Me.” Those familiar songs transformed the ornate theater into a joyful singalong without ever feeling like a nostalgia act.

Campbell’s understated stage presence remains one of his greatest strengths. There were no theatrical flourishes or arena-rock excesses—just a musician entirely at ease with his instrument and his audience. His quiet humor and relaxed storytelling between songs reinforced the sense that fans were spending an evening with an old friend.

As the final chords of “You Wreck Me” rang through the Pantages and the audience rose for a standing ovation, one thing was clear: Mike Campbell no longer needs to be introduced as Tom Petty’s guitarist. With The Dirty Knobs, he has built a band worthy of standing on its own merits—one that celebrates classic American rock while continuing to write its next chapter.
