Masego at the Fillmore on September 5th was the perfect R&B show to close out one of the last weeks of summer. The Fillmore’s classic chandelier ceiling reflecting every glimpse of light felt like a match made in heaven for an R&B show like this and the fans dressed to impress too. Suits and dresses showed off their best wardrobe for such an accomplished artist. Masego is touring his recent album, Fix Your Face, which was released this past July. Throughout his career, Masego has been regarded as a multi-talented artist known for his masterful production and use of numerous instruments. Tonight, he only reinforced those claims.

To open the night Lekan, a Nigerian-American singer from Columbus, Ohio, took the stage. His soft vocals stood out right away, capturing the audience and prompting booming cheers. The way Lekan carried himself on stage was different from most openers. He knew he was going to kill his set. Fans all over the venue sang along as he interacted with the front row. His setlist mixed more ‘classic’ soul sounds with groovier afrobeat rhythms that made for a perfect energy that forced everyone in the room to start to dance. After a brief social media plug it was impossible to not remember Lekan.

Before Masego took the stage his backing band played an instrumental that lasted a few minutes and just as Masego took the stage the crowd roared. It was clear the whole venue was ready for what was to come. The first three songs were all off Fix Your Face. Wonderwoman, Limerence, and Heaven showed that the setlist would be focused on this new work. Heaven featured Masego splitting up the left, center, and right of the stage into different harmonizing pitches and cuing them into the song to create one of the coolest fan interactions I’ve seen in a while. Slowly he pieced together the song by making each section sing individually and bringing it all together in the end to wrap the song up. This moment would quickly become the trend of the night as every opportunity he got Masego would interact, joke, and talk to the crowd. After a few more somber tracks and appearances from his saxophone and synth guitar Masego joked that we all need to get the party going because it’s Saturday night. As the next beat started playing, Masego remarked “What is this Usher beat?” and he started doing Usher’s iconic glitch dance which generated a great reaction from the crowd. During a few tracks Masego threw items to the fans. During Mystery Lady he threw roses into the crowd and during another track he threw wads of special dollar bills into the crowd.

As his set ended he let his drummer, Jonathan Curry take the spotlight playing a masterful drum solo that silenced the crowd. Masego left the stage to an eruption of cheering and fans begging for just one more song. Walking out of the venue the crowd was electric, everyone talking about how great the show was. This was assisted by a man right outside the venue playing the guitar and singing the Time song Jungle Love. It felt like the perfect send-off to a show that proved just how versatile Masego is as a musician, performer, and entertainer.
