Grand Casino Arena presents Journey

Some concerts are about nostalgia. Others are about the present. Journey’s performance Sunday night at Grand Casino Arena was both.

Before the first note was played, the anticipation in the arena was unmistakable. By the time the band launched into its opening number, it was clear that the audience had come not simply to hear a collection of familiar songs, but to relive the soundtrack of their lives.

And Journey delivered.

Guitarist Neal Schon remains the musical engine of the band, and his playing was a highlight throughout the evening. His solos were powerful without becoming self-indulgent, and the unmistakable guitar work that has defined Journey’s sound for generations was on full display.

Jonathan Cain provided the other essential half of that classic sound, while Arnel Pineda commanded the stage with an impressive combination of vocal power and enthusiasm. Pineda’s performance demonstrated why he has become such an important part of Journey’s continuing story.

But on this night, the audience was very much part of the performance.

When the opening notes of “Faithfully” filled the arena, thousands of fans sang along. “Lights” produced another wave of recognition, while “Wheel in the Sky” brought an unmistakable feeling of classic-rock nostalgia. Yet nothing compared with the communal eruption that accompanied “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

For a few minutes, the distinction between performer and audience seemed to disappear. The band played; the crowd sang; and one of rock’s most recognizable anthems became something shared by everyone in the building.

That was the magic of the evening.

Journey’s music has endured because it has always been bigger than any particular moment. These are songs about hope, distance, heartbreak, perseverance and dreams — themes that don’t age. Hearing them performed live, decades after many were first released, made that staying power especially apparent.

The concert also carried an added sense of significance as part of the band’s Final Frontier Tour. There was a celebratory quality to the evening, but also an awareness that fans could be witnessing the final chapters of a remarkable touring history.

The closing moments were appropriately exuberant. “Any Way You Want It” sent the crowd into the night on a high note, with the arena alive with singing, applause and celebration.

Journey’s October 4 performance wasn’t merely a trip down memory lane. It was a reminder of what great arena rock can accomplish: bringing thousands of strangers together through songs they know by heart.

For one memorable night in St. Paul, Journey didn’t just revisit the past.

They made it feel alive again.
