On a surprisingly busy Tuesday night in downtown Minneapolis people flocked into the city. It’s not every night that both the Twins play and a show goes down at The Fillmore. Fans lined up outside the venue in oversized jeans and metal jewelry to see underground music’s icon Jane Remover. Walking in the venue it was clear the show was sold out. Fans lined up from one end of the venue to the other for merch and slowly as showtime got closer empty space became a rare resource.
Jane Remover is one of those rare artists that encapsulate so many genres, but also have their distinct sound. Starting out on SoundCloud, Jane Remover quickly gained a cult following. As touched on earlier, their music spans multiple genres such as digicore, progressive pop, shoegaze, and indie rock. Coming through on their Live Exhibit tour their new EP under the alias Venturing called Nowhere EP was just another showcase of their versatility as it takes inspiration from a more emo sound with indie elements.
Before Jane Remover took the stage, Dazegxd, an American DJ and producer came out for a 30 minute set to get the crowd warmed up. Dazegxd is a skilled professional when it comes to making people move. Elite mixes, beat drops, and a combination of throwback hits and current club classics make it impossible to not start dancing. This got to a point where even the security guards in the pit were bopping their heads. About halfway through his set moshpits started opening up and fans were singing along to seemingly every song played. Dazegxd served as the perfect opener and energy tone setter for Jane Remover to come out onto the stage.
The lighting for this show was different from many shows. It featured two large backlights consisting of many little light bulbs and also big light rectangles that almost looked like white tvs. On top of this there was overtop backlighting that flashed on and off as performances occurred. Just as Dazegxd’s mixes got slower, a fog machine sprayed fog across the stage and the lights started to flash on and off. This is when Jane Remover took the stage. Fans erupted into cheers, phones and Nintendo DS systems were brought out to record the performance. This first song was TWICE REMOVED. Throughout the night they went back and forth performing slower or more melodic songs that featured more singing and songs that were seemingly made for the chance to play them live just for the fans to move around and mosh to. One highlight track was push which was performed for the first time this night.
Throughout the night Jane Remover talked to the audience. They shared stories and expressed gratitude for all of their “day 1” fans highlighting that the last time they headlined in Minneapolis they played 7th Street Entry and that the Fillmore was officially the largest headlining room they’ve performed at. One of the biggest standout moments was when Jane Remover said “This song goes out to anyone who’s changed their name before”. Like they were following orders the crowd started chanting “JR JR JR JR” and that just happened to be the song that they performed. The last song of this massive hour and forty five minute long set was their biggest hit Dancing with your eyes closed after the performance ended they thanked everyone for being at the show and gave permission for the fans to go home.
Leaving the venue fans took photos with each other and expressed how tired theft are because they moshed for the entire show. Fans left knowing Jane Remover cares about them and wanted to put on a masterpiece of a show. After opening for a few acts over the past few years it’s clear that Jane Remover is ready for a headlining set just like this one.
