Mystic Lake Amphitheater in Shakopee, Minnesota, is the state’s newest outdoor concert venue, and after opening just last month, it’s already proving to be a major destination for live music. With an ambitious inaugural lineup, the venue is set for a busy 2026 season. Food trucks, beverage stands, and Adirondack chairs scattered across the lawn create a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere, giving concertgoers plenty to enjoy before the music begins.

Opening the evening was Hermanos Gutiérrez, the instrumental duo of brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez, who formed the project more than 20 years ago. Their music is unlike anything else, blending rich Latin influences with cinematic, atmospheric guitar work that effortlessly transports listeners to another place. Without singing a single lyric, the brothers told stories rooted in their Mexican heritage through every note they played. Their chemistry on stage was undeniable, and their uplifting, soulful performance made them a perfect
complement to the evening. They are absolutely a band worth discovering.

As the sun set over a hot and humid Minnesota evening, Jack Johnson brought his signature laid-back Hawaiian spirit to Mystic Lake Amphitheater on his SURFILMUSIC Tour. More than just a concert, the show offered an intimate look into the experiences that have shaped both his life and his songwriting.

Johnson opened with a medley of “Mudfootball,” “Flake,” and “In the Summertime” while home videos from his childhood played across the large screen behind the band. Throughout the night, the visuals continued with surf films and personal footage Johnson created during the 1990s, allowing the audience to see the moments, friendships, and adventures that inspired many of the songs they know so well. The storytelling elevated the performance beyond a typical greatest-hits set. Hearing Johnson explain the origins of his music while watching the accompanying footage gave the songs fresh meaning and a deeper emotional connection. It became clear how seamlessly surfing, filmmaking, and music have intertwined throughout his life, each inspiring and influencing the others.

Midway through the show, Hermanos Gutiérrez returned to the stage to collaborate with Stop Blues: Together they also performed to on to the Light: Wong trom Jong on F. documentary project that he dedicated to the memory of a late friend, creating one of the
evening’s most heartfelt moments. Johnson closed the night with an intimate acoustic set that highlighted both his generosity and connection with the audience.

He invited CJ Rodriguez of Eden Prairie onstage to join him for a performance of “Home,” creating a memorable surprise for both the fan and the crowd. He followed with a touching cover of Jimmy Buffett’s “A Pirate Looks at Forty” before ending the evening with “No Other Way” and the beloved “Better Together.”

From a technical standpoint, the concert was outstanding. The sound mix was remarkably clear and balanced throughout the venue. Neither Johnson nor his band uses in-ear monitors, preferring instead to hear the natural sound of the performance and the audience— a choice that seemed to enhance the authenticity of the evening. Johnson’s easygoing personality shined just as brightly as his music.

Throughout the night he checked in with the audience, making sure everyone was handling the summer heat, took requests from fans, and wasn’t afraid to laugh at himself. When someone requested a song he hadn’t played in years, he admitted he couldn’t remember the chords, drawing laughs from the crowd with his self-deprecating humor. Playing for more than two hours, Johnson seemed in no hurry to leave the stage. In fact, his longtime tech, Boogie, reminded him that the venue was about to shut down for the night.

Johnson noted that it had been 12 years since his last Minnesota performance. After an evening that felt both deeply personal and effortlessly entertaining, here’s hoping fans won’t have to wait another 12 years for his return.
