Blitzkid stretched the Halloween energy a little into November at the Turf Club on a rainy gloomy Tuesday night. This was one of those shows where I went based on tour posters and vibes alone, but I saw that they were a horror punk band, so I was in.

Opening was local band They Live with some classic goth/hardcore music. Fairly fast-paced and with two vocalists sharing the screaming, it was loud and fun and dark all at the same time. I don’t have much more to say than that it was a solid start.

Blitzkid came out swinging. A few things I learned throughout the show as someone who had never heard or seen them before: they have been a band for almost 30 years, they’d never played in the Twin Cities before, and there is definitely an audience for them here. I found myself in the front row with a big stupid smile on my face as almost everyone around me sang along to almost every song. I felt a bit bad that I couldn’t sing along, but I was having a blast regardless.

Their bassist/vocalist Argyle Goolsby (a name I am obsessed with) was one of the most energetic performers I’ve ever seen. The guitarist and other vocalist held down a stoic side of the stage, while Goolsby flailed around the stage, playing the bass like a standup bass, a violin, and swinging that thing around like crazy. Even through some technical and physical difficulties (that poor bass strap kept coming off), the energy was phenomenal and it was hard for me to choose between swinging my head and just watching it all happen. Their drummer looked liked he was having the time of his life the whole time; also a delight to watch.

The music was unrelenting, fast-paced punky metal goodness, all horror-themed. I adored it. A thing I’ve found with these darker themed, horror-esque bands is that a lot of the music actually ends up being rather beautiful melodically. It was an excellent, spooky time overall. There weren’t any crazy lights or stagewear, but the music and the energy of the musicians was really all they needed. I understood why there were so many passionate people in the crowd, and Blitzkid definitely made a fan of me!

I hope they return because there is definitely a place for them here. Their new album, Modern Hel, came out in September, and I highly recommend it if you want to stretch your spooky season into the winter.
