This show was originally supposed to be happening back in January so after waiting months I was definitely ready to finally see SLANDER! Having now been to a handful of edm shows, one of the first things I look at when walking in is the lighting setup and this was the first time I’ve ever seen the Armory set up like this! They had long trusses running down both sides of the venue with lights hanging from the ceiling so before SLANDER even came out you could tell the production was going to be insane!
The stage itself had one giant screen behind the DJ booth and I couldn’t even begin to count how many lights and lasers were surrounding it! I know I say this after every EDM show but this seriously might have been the most individual lights I’ve seen on one stage! Pyro at an EDM show is no surprise anymore but I was not expecting them to use it as much as they did! There seemed to be flames shooting up from the stage every ten minutes and I was not complaining!
I hadn’t listened to much SLANDER before this show so I mostly knew them for their more melodic side. I wasn’t exactly shocked by how heavy the set got, but I liked seeing that side of them show up as much as it did! The mix between the melodic side and the heavy side was probably what I enjoyed most. During the lighter and more melodic parts the production felt brighter and more colorful and then a heavy drop would come in and suddenly you had darker visuals with flames and what seemed like millions of lasers everywhere! The production fit the sound really well and didn’t feel like they were just firing off everything they had the entire set.
The crowd was just as crazy as the production! This was easily some of the highest crowd energy I’ve seen during a set and there was even a wall of death! Although not my first time seeing one, it was a first for me at an EDM show! The entire set had a higher and more chaotic energy than I’ve usually seen at EDM shows. Normally you can keep walking farther away from the stage and eventually find an area where people are mostly standing around but that really wasn’t the case Friday night. It felt like every inch of the Armory had people dancing and enjoying the night. After having this show pushed back, SLANDER definitely made the wait worth it!
