38 Special – Welch MN – March 5th 2017

There is now proof that blending Classic Rock and Classic Country on one bill is a formula that can work. Fans of both genres came together at Treasure Island Resort & Casino Saturday night (3/4) to rock out with 38 Special after stomping their boots to Jamey Johnson. The venue was sold out and people stayed in their seats to experience both artists.

Johnson’s set could only be described as first rate with an 11-piece band that was very in-synch and effective at producing big sound. Even those not familiar with his material could appreciate “I Saw the Light” (Hank Williams) and “Georgia On My Mind” (Ray Charles), which featured many of the talented players. The crowd was particularly engaged during “Give It Away” (George Strait).

Some may have noticed that Don Barnes was the sole original member of 38 Special in the current line-up. It should be noted that his presence was key considering he is the voice behind many of their hits. The other bandmates more than did the material justice and not only sounded great, but were entertaining as well. They hammered out song after song with little break in-between and fed of the energy of enthusiastic fans who were on their feet dancing and singing along. “Heart Needs a Second Chance” was a surprising stand out along with the expected “Caught Up In You” and “Hold On Loosely”.

Props to Treasure Island for great sound and lighting all night long making for a quality concert experience. Classic Rock station KQRS also added a nice touch with DJ’s Zepp and Terri hosting a pre-show party in the Parlay Lounge offering chances to win ticket upgrades and meet-n-greet passes.
