The Wiz – Orpheum Theater – Minneapolis MN – December 16th 2025
The Orpheum Theatre was filled with anticipation on opening night as The Wiz took the stage, launching its Minneapolis run with a production that emphasized vocal power, spirited choreography, and the enduring heart of the beloved musical.
From its opening moments, the cast established a lively tone, drawing the audience into Dorothy’s journey with confident performances and rich, soulful vocals. Applause came early and often, particularly during well-known numbers such as “Ease on Down the Road,” which energized the house and showcased the strength of the ensemble. The emotional centerpiece of the evening arrived with “Home,” delivered with clarity and restraint that earned one of the night’s strongest ovations.
The supporting characters—Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion—balanced humor with sincerity, offering warmth and charm without overshadowing the story’s emotional core. Their chemistry helped maintain momentum throughout the first act, which moved at a brisk and engaging pace.
Choreography was a defining feature of the production, blending contemporary movement with classic musical theatre style. The ensemble’s commitment and athleticism were evident, though on opening night there were moments where spacing and synchronization felt slightly compressed on the Orpheum’s expansive stage.
Visually, the production favored stylization over spectacle. Colorful costumes and dynamic lighting created a vibrant atmosphere, while projections were used in place of large physical sets. This approach allowed for smooth scene transitions but occasionally left some moments feeling less fully realized. Minor technical inconsistencies—likely opening-night adjustments—were noticeable but did little to detract from the overall experience.
Musically, the orchestra delivered a solid performance, supporting the show’s funk, gospel, and soul-infused score. Pacing in the second act slowed at times, with transitions that softened the dramatic drive, though the production regained its footing as it approached the finale.
The audience responded enthusiastically, offering a standing ovation at curtain call. The exchange of energy between performers and patrons underscored the communal spirit at the heart of The Wiz. But that said, you all should keep your phones off.
While not without areas to refine, opening night at the Orpheum demonstrated that The Wiz remains a joyful and resonant piece of musical theatre. With strong performances and an engaged audience, the production opened its Minneapolis engagement on a celebratory note.
