The Hold Steady, Bob Mould Band, Dillinger Four – Minnesota State Fair Grandstand – September 2nd, 2023

Lens on Music at the Fair 2023 by Patrick Dunn

The Hold Steady plays live with Bob Mould Band and Dillinger Four.

The Hold Steady stands as one of the most compelling bands in modern rock. Their music brims with vivid storytelling, energetic riffs, and a sense of camaraderie. Led by frontman Craig Finn, the band has carved out a unique niche, blending punk energy with classic rock influences.

Formed in 2003, The Hold Steady quickly made a mark on the music scene. Their debut album, “Almost Killed Me,” introduced fans to their distinctive sound. Finn’s lyrical prowess shone through, crafting narratives about youth, struggle, and resilience.

The band’s follow-up, “Separation Sunday,” solidified their reputation. The album’s concept-driven approach captivated listeners. Songs like “Your Little Hoodrat Friend” and “How a Resurrection Really Feels” showcased Finn’s ability to weave intricate tales. Each track painted a vivid picture, drawing fans into the world of The Hold Steady.

In my opinion, the radio station that actively does the most to promote local music coming to the Twin Cities is 89.3 The Current. The same can be said about national acts. Each year at the Minnesota State Fair, they host a concert celebrating Minnesota music that they cleverly refer to as Music On-A-Stick. Once again, they put together an attractive lineup for 2023 featuring The Hold Steady, Bob Mould Band, and Dillinger Four. It was easy to identify the station’s demographic listener by those in attendance who are passionate about the music that moves them and did there part to encourage great performances by each of the bands.
