Dead Eyes
Dead Eyes opened the night and you couldn’t have picked a better band to warm up the room for the night ahead. This was my first time seeing the Baltimore band, and by the end of their set I was already sold.

They blend heaviness and melody in a way that never feels forced. The heavier sections hit with weight, then the clean vocals come in smooth and catchy without killing the momentum. That contrast is always a win for me, and Dead Eyes used it well. The vocals were the hook for me. The switch between grit and clarity felt natural, not like two different bands stitched together.

For an opener, they controlled the room well too. You could see people who didn’t know them at first slowly getting pulled in as the set rolled on. If you check them out and need a starting point, go listen to “Better Off.” It’s a perfect snapshot of what they do!

Face Yourself
Having only formed in 2023, Face Yourself may be new but their sound pulls straight from that early Myspace era of deathcore. It has that old school feel you don’t get much from new music and as someone who grew up on that older style of deathcore, I became an instant fan the first time I listened to Face Yourself.

What first hooked me was last September when they dropped the Fury EP, and I’d still throw that into the EP of the year conversation for 2025. The EP is short but each song hits hard and I was not disappointed after hearing songs from that EP live. The instrumentals were tight and deliberate, every heavy section landing clean.

Vocalist Yasmine Liverneaux is unreal. The range alone is impressive, but it’s the control that stands out. She has some of the widest vocal range out of any metal vocalist going right now. I’d put her in the same tier as some of the most respected names in modern deathcore right now. The band backed that up with high energy and fun crowd interaction to make for a crazy mix of a fun but brutal set.

If you’re starting somewhere, “Wet Dreams” is the move. It captures their range and that old school edge perfectly. Next time they’re back, I’m there and I suggest you don’t miss it.

Within Destruction
Within Destruction have been doing this since 2010, and you can tell. Coming out of Slovenia and still anchored by founding members Vocalist Rok Rupnik and Drummer Luka Vezzosi, they’ve managed to evolve without losing their core. They seemed to have now found the perfect third in Howard Fang, joining the band on guitar in 2020 and helping the band seamlessly add clean vocals to their mix in 2022.

Their mix of deathcore and death metal has always leaned technical and punishing. When they added clean vocals on 2022’s Lotus, it could have easily felt forced but it was the opposite, it felt like they always had cleans in their songs. The cleans add another layer without softening the blow, and live, that contrast makes the heavy sections land even harder.

The set was relentless. No dragged out pauses, no drop in intensity. The pits opened up fast and stayed moving and were as brutal as expected. What impressed me most was how tight everything stayed. Even at their most chaotic, the band never drifted. They balanced crowd interaction with precision, keeping the room engaged without losing momentum. Can’t wait to catch Within Destruction the next time they come through.

The Browning
Seeing The Browning again brought me right back to 2012. The first time I caught them was at Station 4 in St. Paul with Like Moths to Flames and local legends Your Memorial. I walked in not totally sure what I was about to hear and left an instant fan. At that point I hadn’t really experienced dubstep fused into metal in a way that actually worked live, and I remember being genuinely surprised by how natural it felt. It didn’t feel like a gimmick like I had expected, It was heavy, catchy, and different.

Heavy music and electronic elements don’t always translate live. The low end can get muddy and the drops can fall flat. With The Browning, that’s never the case. The drops hit hard and feel massive. It adds this extra punch that keeps the set moving in waves instead of just straight aggression. I had seen them once since 2012, but it had still been at least a decade. Somehow Jonny McBee’s vocals still sound just as sharp and aggressive as I remember. No drop in intensity. If anything, it feels more controlled now.

They’ve always been a go to band for blasting in the car, especially if you’ve got a solid sound system. And I didn’t even realize until right before the show that their guitarist is Keem, known online for his reaction videos. I’ve definitely found a few new bands through his channel over the years, so that was a cool connection to make.
