Suicide Girls Blackheart Burlesque – Varsity Theater – Minneapolis, MN – October 21, 2014

The Suicide Girls are back to the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, MN on October 21, 2014. What is a Suicide Girl, you ask? Suicide Girls are beautiful alternative models, covered in tattoos and piercings, who are just downright fun. This is the second time since last year that they have come to the Varsity Theater since 2013 and the second time they have sold the place out.

So what is this all about? The Suicide Girls are presented by Blackheart Burlesque and are doing a touring burlesque show. The show is based on various films and TV shows, which are incorporated into the dress, dance, and design of every sexualized act. Such media includes, “Planet of the Apes”, “The Big Lebowski”, “Game of Thrones”, and much more. They dance to numerous songs including “Bad Girls” by M.I.A. (which is incorporated into the “Game of Thrones” bit), “Where is my Mind?” by The Pixies, and several other songs, pulling in a variety of audience styles.

The audience is offered a number of goodies throughout the night, including free memberships, meetings with the girls, and more. They are encouraged to photograph and Instagram their photos to the girls backstage to win prizes, which causes phones to be in the air for the entire night. It’s both a positive and a negative, as it kind of adds to the atmosphere of the night, but at the same time, having to watch the show through a numerous phones all night can get old quick.

The Suicide Girls are very much into their show and do a great job. They are incredibly enthusiastic and their coordination is fantastic. It is heard numerous times throughout the crowd that the prior year was more enjoyable, which we actually agree with, but not due to the performances. The audience last year just seemed more into the show. If anyone has been to a show with a fun audience and one with the exact opposite, they will understand.

There are a few things that could have been done differently. The constant use of phones really hurt the show, in my opinion because a lot of the audience was simply forced to watch the show through phones, which is becoming a sad reality these days. Also, a lot of people expected there to be more new performances. Several of the acts were rehashed from last year’s tour, which can leave people feeling a bit let down, as they want to see something fresh.

Overall, there are fantastic performances and attitudes by the Suicide Girls. We could not have asked more from them. To do so would be ridiculous. To make more of a success next year, I would suggest more new acts, less use of phones by not flat out telling the audience to use them through the whole show, and limiting the VIP because it was incredibly crowded in that section.
