Ice Nine Kills’ Silver Scream-A-Thon tour came through Minneapolis on May 13th with a masterclass in theatrical metalcore, offering fans a two-night horror-themed musical extravaganza. Night 1 was a full performance of their acclaimed album “The Silver Scream”, with support from The Word Alive, The Funeral Portrait, and Melrose Avenue.
Melrose Avenue, the Sydney-based melodic heavy band, started off the evening with an exciting performance, showcasing their unique blend of pop hooks, metalcore intensity, and raw emotion. Their set featured tracks from their latest EP, “Fool and the Beggar”, and frontman Vlado Saric’s emotive vocals captivated the audience, seamlessly transitioning from melodic passages to powerful screams, embodying the band’s ability to balance vulnerability with aggression. It was a great opening to the night and demonstrated their potential for broader recognition, as the crowd was engaged and energized.
The Funeral Portrait’s performance was a great theatrical addition to the lineup, and their emotionally charged show was both musically and visually compelling. Frontman Lee Jennings commanded the stage with electrifying energy, leaping onto platforms and engaging the crowd with fervent intensity and theatrics, and bassist Robert Weston matched this energy, exploring every corner of the stage. Their commitment to inclusivity was evident in their performance, featuring gestures and emotion that challenge norms and promoted acceptance. The band’s active engagement with their fanbase in attendance, affectionately termed the “Coffin Crew,” fostered a sense of community and belonging for the whole crowd.
The Word Alive were up next and continued the emotional and connected feel from the previous sets. Their setlist prominently featured tracks from their 2023 album Hard Reset, including the opening number “The Word Alive Is Dead…”. Vocalist Telle Smith’s emotive delivery bridged the band’s earlier work with their newer material, resonating with both longtime fans and newcomers in the crowd. Guitarists Jose DelRio and Logan Abernethy delivered powerful riffs and engaging stage presence, and drummer Devin Attard carried a powerful beat that resonated off the whole room. Their set maintained high energy throughout, effectively setting the stage for the headliners.
The highly anticipated set from Ice Nine Kills did not disappoint. The theatrics immersed the audience in a live rendition of The Silver Scream, with tracks inspired by classic horror films and concurrent live-action role play going on, including horror film masks, knives, and blood. Songs like “The American Nightmare” and “Stabbing in the Dark” were delivered with high energy, with additional members on stage acting out scenes from well-known horror films. From a toilet paper power shooter to sharks on stage, the Silver Scream-A-Thon tour was a must-see for fans of horror and metalcore, delivering a unique blend of music and theatricality that set it apart from a typical concert and was a very memorable night for the packed crowd.
