Hadestown – Orpheum Theater – Minneapolis MN – February 11th 2025

Hennepin Arts brought Hadestown to the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis on a bitterly cold night in February.  Despite the extreme cold, the audience was tremendously upbeat and happy to be out for the evening.

I have to say that Hadestown was one of the first musicals that I have been to in some time that I enjoyed beginning to end. This may be because I really enjoyed Greek mythology in my teenage years.  So I love seeing stage productions of the mythology.  All the tales teach timeless lessons.  This story is no different.  Also, I wanted to see this when it was in London last year.  We were there at the time, but we were unable to get to it.  Because of that, I was quite excited for this one.

For those familiar with Greek mythology, this is the telling of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.  For those not familiar, it’s still a good story.  Again, the theme is timeless, so it’s always great.
This version of the story had Eurydice as a poor girl who falls in love with Orpheus, a struggling songwriter.  Unlike the original myth, there are no prophecies.  Also, this is more of a modern retelling.  The music is fantastic.  I felt that the musical is the type I could listen to in my car or in places outside of simply being onstage.
Hadestown is one that I would recommend exponentially.  The music is incredible and the musicians were all very talented.  It was just a beautiful production.  Lessons to be learned from this are to believe in those you love and to also get out there and see some Greek inspired theater.
