Griz live at The Armory Night 1
Griz – The Armory – Minneapolis MN – March
The Armory presents Griz
Review and photos by Jesse McKinney
Walking into the Armory it was obvious this was a different kind of crowd. I’ve been to a lot of shows there and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it that full no matter the genre! The giant screens were the first thing that hit me, and once GRiZ got started, the energy never really let up.
Right away he had a trumpet player, a trombone player, and GRiZ on sax gave the set a different feel than a standard EDM show. He’d jump up on the DJ booth every so often to play from up there, and the live sax parts ended up being the moments that stuck out the most to me. Those solos gave the whole set a little extra personality instead of everything blending together.
He also brought out a singer and a rapper a few different times, which worked really well! That part of the set stood out because it wasn’t just guest spots for the sake of it, it was cool hearing how the live vocals and instruments were worked into everything without throwing off the flow. The visuals were massive all night, colorful in that big festival-style way, and the lasers were completely over the top in the best way. I’ve honestly never seen that many at one show!
What I liked most was the amount of groove mixed in with the heavier drops. It didn’t feel like the set was just building toward the next big moment over and over. More than anything, this felt like a community celebration rather than just another concert. Hearing GRiZ say that 100% of the merch sales were going to a local charity only made that stand out more. It was a really fun show and I’m glad the snow held off long enough for everybody to have a great night!
