This was kind of a last-minute thing for me. A buddy called me up and said hey, do you want to go see Godsmack live tonight? I immediately said yes because I’ve seen them seven maybe 8 times over the years and they’ve always put on a spectacular show. Plus, I had heard that they were doing a special acoustic strip down type show at smaller theaters like the one at Mystic lake showroom. I don’t know their catalogue by heart, i know the hits. But i’ve always enjoyed seeing them play live because the energy with the fans along with the music and the pyro makes for a perfect rock show.

However, they’re doing something new right now and are currently on the Vibez Tour. Was being promoted as an intimate evening with Godsmack and that’s exactly what it was. It wasn’t full on acoustic because they did have electric guitars as well as electric bass and fully mixed drums. They brought two friends along to help round out the sound. Sully didn’t play guitar at all last night; all he did was sing and he also played the bongos.

It was a cool show and I wish they were at least within a reasonable drive I would see it again. But unfortunately, they are not. I think it’s one of the best shows I’ve seen in the last six months, certainly this year so far. I left feeling like i was hopeful that they will consider doing a live album of this tour. It reminds me of when R.E.M. did it in the 90s along with many other of the MTV unplugged era. Go as far as to say that there were several spots during the show that I felt like I was at an Alice In Chains show. It was completely out of left field but extremely exciting because the band showed me a side of them that I’ve never seen.

Not only did they cover songs from well-known artists like Led Zeppelin, The Doobie Brothers, Pink Floyd, and Metallica, they worked their way through a / a two hour set of deep cuts with a few of the better-known songs mixed in. I really appreciated this as a concertgoer because if a band is going to stripped down, I’d like to believe that they would give some thought and consideration to their entire body of work and pick the songs that maybe work better acoustically that they don’t perform at a stadium show.

When I think about some of the other bands that I love, I truly wish they would pay attention to what Godsmack is doing, take the queue and go out on a tour like this for the fans. Because it was a smaller intimate setting, sully did some storytelling. It was fun to hear more than just how they write the songs but how the music affects them as much as it does the fans that are there to see them. The one thing I’ve always disliked about concerts in general is when you go see an artist or band and they never speak to the audience. They literally play the entire show without saying a word and then just leave. I get that Alice Cooper does that because of the character that he is, but a lot of other bands as far as i’m concerned don’t have an excuse.

If you get your chance to see this tour, please go. They are a phenomenal band.  Seeing Godsmack live is a concert that you won’t forget.
