Ghost – Myth – Maplewood MN – July 29th 2016

On July 29th, 2016, Ghost played The Myth in Maplewood, Minnesota, delivering a show that was equal parts theatrical and musically thrilling. Fans gathered early, their anticipation building as they awaited the Swedish metal band known for their hauntingly unique performances.

We were lucky enough to photograph a private performance prior to the show.  This was brought to us by 93X.

The atmosphere inside The Myth was electric. As the lights dimmed, a hush fell over the crowd. Suddenly, the stage was bathed in an eerie glow. Ghost, led by the enigmatic Papa Emeritus III, emerged in their signature gothic attire. The audience erupted in cheers, fully aware they were in for a night unlike any other.

The band kicked off the show with “Square Hammer,” immediately grabbing the crowd’s attention with its catchy riff and anthemic chorus. Papa Emeritus III’s charismatic presence was captivating. His theatrical gestures and commanding vocals set the tone for the evening. The Nameless Ghouls, clad in identical masks, provided a tight musical backdrop, blending heavy riffs with melodic undertones.

As they transitioned into “Cirice,” the energy in the room intensified. Fans sang along, their voices merging with the band’s haunting melodies. The stage setup was elaborate, featuring stained glass windows and an altar, enhancing the otherworldly vibe of the performance. It was clear that Ghost wasn’t just about music; they were about creating an immersive experience.

Throughout the night, Ghost delivered a mix of songs from their albums. Tracks like “Year Zero” and “He Is” showcased the band’s versatility, shifting from heavy, sinister tones to more melodic, almost hymn-like pieces. The contrast kept the audience engaged, their eyes fixed on the spectacle unfolding before them.

One of the highlights was “Ritual.” The crowd moved as one, swept up in the song’s infectious energy. Papa Emeritus III’s voice soared, filling the venue with a powerful resonance. The Nameless Ghouls were equally impressive, their musicianship precise and dynamic.

Between songs, Papa Emeritus III interacted with the crowd, his dark humor and playful banter adding a personal touch to the show. He spoke of the band’s journey, their rise in the metal scene, and their gratitude for the unwavering support of their fans. These moments of connection made the performance feel intimate, despite the grandiose setting.

As the night drew to a close, Ghost ended with “Monstrance Clock.” The song’s haunting refrain, “Come together, together as one,” echoed through The Myth, creating a sense of unity among the attendees. The audience swayed, their voices joining in unison, creating a powerful finale to an unforgettable evening.
