Flynt Flossy & Turquoise Jeep – The Turf Club – St. Paul, MN – August 22nd 2023

The Turf Club was bumping this last Tuesday with sweaty beats, positive bops, and good vibes all around. Turquoise Jeep, with rappers Flynt Flossy and Whatchymacallit fronting, brought their unique brand of entertainment to the people.

Local rapper JAMESG, who is an artist, producer, and self-proclaimed semi-pro heely-er, opened up the night. I had never heard of this guy before.  But his beats were very danceable, and he had a wonderful charm to his songs.  They matched well with his fast-spitting lyrics. He ended up getting on the floor and rapping to the crowd on their level.  It gave the whole show a very personal, fun feel. He kept true to his heely claims as well.  He played a song called “Toes Up” where he literally put on his heelys and rolled around on the floor while he rapped. I can definitely say he gained a fan tonight in me.

Flynt Flossy and Turquoise Jeep have been around since about 2009 or so.  Their presence was mostly on early Youtube.  That was with viral hits like “Lemme Smang It” and “Did I Mention I Like to Dance.” Tonight, rappers Flynt Flossy and Whatchyamacallit, the founders of Turquoise Jeep, were performing. There’s a specific flavor of mid-2010s internet that is hard to describe.  But it fits them perfectly. The unique absurdity of their songs, coupled with the legitimate producing and performing of it, make for a show that you truly have to see. I would say that the dancing and shenanigans that went on on stage were half the appeal of the show. With a minimal stage production, they were able to keep the crowd engaged and going.  Their energy was just that infectious. I was absolutely flabbergasted, laughing, and dancing the whole night.

If you ever need a pick-me-up, look up some of their videos.  Or even better, catch them the next time they’re in town. Flynt Flossy’s new album, Mosaic Clouds, is out now.
