Walking into First Avenue on a Friday night always carries a buzz, but there was something extra in the air for Durry’s hometown headlining set. Fans packed the legendary Minneapolis venue shoulder to shoulder, ready to celebrate the band’s rise and see them play on the city’s most iconic stage for a sold out show. With local punks VIAL opening the night, the bill felt like a celebration of Minnesota music at its sharpest, loudest, and most heartfelt.
VIAL: The Spark That Lit the Fuse
The night kicked off with VIAL, who wasted no time in shaking the room awake. Their blend of punk grit and melodic hooks hit like a shot of adrenaline — catchy enough to sing along to, but raw enough to sting. Each member played with fearless energy, moving across the stage with confidence that filled the cavernous venue.
Even in a short set, VIAL showed off their knack for turning angsty themes into cathartic singalongs. The crowd, many of whom may not have known the band well before this, quickly caught on — nodding, moving, and shouting along as if they’d been fans for years. By the time their final notes rang out, the audience wasn’t just warmed up; they were fully locked in, primed for what was coming next.
Durry: A Hometown Triumph
When Austin and Taryn Durry and their bandmates took the stage, the roar from the crowd was immediate and deafening — a hometown welcome that set the tone for the rest of the night. There’s always a special energy when local heroes headline First Avenue, and Durry embraced that from the first chord.
Their setlist pulled heavily from Suburban Legend and newer material, with anthems like “Who’s Laughing Now” and “Worse for Wear” turning into full-on singalongs, the crowd practically drowning out the band at times. Newer songs, including a freshly unveiled track, “Dead Media,” kept things fresh and hinted at the exciting direction the band is headed.
Between songs, the sibling banter and heartfelt gratitude made the large venue feel intimate. Taryn’s playful call for the crowd to put on their 3D glasses mid-set was a quirky touch that added personality and made the show feel uniquely theirs. When their dad jumped in on trumpet and references were made to their mom’s involvement in the visuals, it felt less like a concert and more like a family celebration — fitting for a band that’s always emphasized their roots.
Musically, Durry was tight and confident. The guitars rang crisp, the drums hit hard, and even when Austin’s vocals pushed into strained territory, it only added to the raw honesty of the performance. The band sounded bigger than ever, yet still carried that small-town sincerity that makes their songs resonate so deeply.
Atmosphere & Impact
From the opening notes of VIAL to the last encore from Durry, the atmosphere never dipped. First Avenue’s storied walls absorbed the energy of a night that was both a showcase of two rising Minnesota acts and a reminder of the community that surrounds them. VIAL brought the bite, Durry brought the heart, and together they created a show that felt as much about connection as it did about the music.
Final Take
September 12th at First Avenue wasn’t just another Friday night — it was a statement. VIAL proved they’re a band to watch, delivering a fiery opening set that lit the fuse. And Durry, playing their biggest hometown stage yet, proved they’ve arrived, balancing humor, honesty, and hometown pride in a way that only they can.
It was the kind of show people will talk about as a “remember when” moment — when a local band stepped onto the First Ave stage and made it theirs.
