DEATHBYROMY – 7TH STREET ENTRY – MINNEAPOLIS MN – MAY 18TH 2025

I love an excuse to check out new music, so getting to pop by the Entry for a sold out show for a band I’d never heard of was a great way to spend my Sunday evening. It was DeathbyRomy’s first US headline tour. The vibes were alternative and grungy from the start, with a bunch of fashionable people lined up to get in, and the place was packed fairly soon after doors.
Heffy was the only opener, and brought some edgy synth and heavily filtered vocals circa the 2010s. He had good energy and the crowd was there for it, moshing almost immediately and jumping and dancing around. It was good to see people give some energy to the opener; all too often I see people give nothing if they don’t know the band. He blasted through a bunch of songs; very few of them were more than 2 and a half minutes long. It kept things lively until DeathbyRomy came on.
I’d not heard of DeathbyRomy, but I looked up her aesthetic beforehand and I dug the visuals. Her music absolutely matches it, with dark, heavy bass beats and haunting synths. It’s sexy, dirty, grungy, and industrial, but with pop vocals floating overtop of it. She’s been described as “the love-child of Lady Gaga and Marilyn Manson,” and I have to agree with that. It’s music you can dance to but also headbang to, which is one of my favorites. It has modern nu-metal energy. The entire band was barely dressed, covered in tattoos, and very sweaty. Hair flips abounded, Romy was on the ground, everyone was kicking around, and both I and the crowd were loving it. I very much enjoy when a band crafts an aesthetic to match their music, and gives it all they’ve got performance wise. It makes a show an entire package rather than just music being played. When it comes to smaller bands, oftentimes they’ll have one or the other; incredible stage presence or good music. DeathbyRomy definitely accomplishes both. Romy had a command over the audience and it truly felt like she belonged on that stage.
With this show being completely sold out, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s on a much bigger stage the next time she comes into town; though a sold out sweaty show at the Entry is always something special.
The tour is almost over, but you can check out DeathbyRomy’s newest album out now, HOLLYWOOD FOREVER.
