Chicago – Orpheum Theater – MInneapolis MN – Januray 27th 2026
The Orpheum Theater presents Chicago the Musical.
Review by Kyle Hansen
The touring production of Chicago at the Orpheum leans hard into the show’s signature minimalism, and it works. With the orchestra visible onstage and the stripped-down set, the focus stays exactly where it should: razor-sharp choreography, stylized performances, and Bob Fosse’s unmistakable attitude.
The cast delivers confident, high-energy performances, especially in the ensemble numbers. “Cell Block Tango” lands with precision and menace, each performer carving out a distinct character, while “All That Jazz” sets the tone immediately—sleek, sultry, and unapologetically theatrical. The dancing is tight and disciplined rather than flashy, which suits the material and keeps the production grounded in its jazz-age cynicism.
Vocally, the performances are strong across the board, with Roxie and Velma’s rivalry driving the show’s momentum. Billy Flynn is played with enough charm and irony to remind the audience that Chicago is as much satire as spectacle. The pacing is brisk, and the production wisely avoids over-updating or reinterpreting the material.
The Orpheum itself enhances the experience. Its size gives the show a sense of scale without losing intimacy, and the acoustics support the band and vocals well from most seats. This isn’t a lavish reinvention of Chicago—it’s a polished, confident presentation of the classic, trusting the score and choreography to do the heavy lifting.
Bottom line: If you’re looking for a bold, sexy, no-frills take on a Broadway staple, Chicago at the Orpheum delivers exactly what it promises—clean lines, sharp moves, and plenty of razzle-dazzle.
