I got to enjoy a wonderful night of polished pop at the Varsity Theater last week, where Betty Who, an Australian musician and singer, brought her ‘Out of the Darkness’ Tour.
Molly Grace opened up for her, and it was really great to simply hear a really good singer do their thing. Her look was giving 50s girly pinup, with both her and her backup singers wearing matching poofy nightgowns with white chunky heels. Perfectly curled hair and adorable classic makeup accompanied by quick and precise dance moves made the whole set a delight to watch. The girls were having such a great time, and Molly’s pipes were impressive. Many of the songs had sapphic themes, and Molly had a poise and sweetness with a little bit of spicy that made her set a celebration of love.
Betty Who took the stage with her two backup dancers as well, flooded with backlight that made her entrance look like a godly arrival. I appreciated the polish of every single song. I was honestly entranced by the dancing, as every song had its own choreography, and the dancers were excellent. Betty’s singing was impeccable, and the lights, sound, and energy made the entire room light up. People in the crowd were jumping and dancing along to every song, and Betty was eating it up. She looked and acted like she belonged on stage, and performing looked very natural on her. I think the lights went out briefly at one point, and I say think because I’m still not entirely sure, as she just kept going without missing a beat until they came back on. I came for the 80s synth-pop music, and left a definite fan of Betty Who and her performance. Getting to watch performers who are really good at what they do, and are clearly having the time of their life doing it, is why I love going to live shows.
