I always love a small sold out show at the Entry; they’re sweaty, they’re bumpy, and the vibe is always a welcoming one to me. Amira Elfeky brought her Surrender Tour to Minneapolis on Friday the 12th, the first show in a small but completely sold out North American leg.
Opening the night was The Requiem, who came out swinging. They were a mix of emo, rock, and alternative sounds that took me right back to the 2000s (in a good way). The singer in a suit, one dressed like a mall goth, another one shirtless with their hair in their face most of the time…it was truly a wonderfully nostalgic sight but with some fresh takes on the genre to bring it into the modern day. Their songs were heavy, their vocals sharp and clear, and I really enjoyed them.
Second was Ally Nicholas, who slowed things down—but only in tempo. Her vocals had a haunting quality, reminiscent of Ethel Cain, but set against a much heavier backdrop. At times, the music veered into doom-metal territory, with thick, droning guitars and a weighty atmosphere. Yet, Ally’s voice floated effortlessly above it all, mesmerizing and ethereal. Despite barely moving on stage, she held the audience in a kind of quiet rapture.
Lastly, Amira Elfeky took the stage, a gothic princess with long black hair and a long black dress to match. I have been noticing a resurgence in the dreamy, dark romantic alt-rock of the 2000s and I am not complaining in the slightest. Amira’s vocals were floaty, dreamy, but strong to accompany the heavy riffs and synths that accompanied her. One song in particular she stopped singing and the entire room sang it, so loud and clear that I could make out the lyrics. That was a very cool thing to see for a smaller up-and-coming artist. If you’re a fan of Evanescence and other nu-metal bands I would definitely recommend catching a show.
Amira Elfeky’s new single “Hold Onto Me” is out now.
