The Armory Presents: 100 Gecs, and Machine Girl – 10,000 Gecs Tour

It was on interesting night for music at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota Wednesday night. I’ve never head of 100 Gecs before.  But after listening to some of their music, I was very curious to see this project live. I like going into random shows with an open mind.  It’s nice getting out of my comfort zone (since I usually go to metal shows). In total, there were two bands on the bill.  They were Machine girl and 100 Gecs. Let me tell you a little bit about the opening act.

Machine Girl is an American electronic music project created by Matt Stephenson in 2012. It then became a duo project with drummer Sean Kelly in 2015. Their music often features aggressive beats, distorted vocals, and chaotic soundscapes, which can be a jarring but thrilling experience for concert-goers. They weren’t really music that I’d personally listen to, but the crowd seemed to go bonkers over the performance.

After about a half hour set from Machine Girl, it was time for the headliner to take the stage. 100 Gecs is an American music duo formed in 2015, consisting of Laura Les and Dylan Brady. The duo is known for their experimental style, which blends elements of hyperpop, punk rock, and electronic music, resulting in a unique and distinct sound. Along with their interesting music style, they also tend to wear wacky outfits on stage that have bright colors, bold patterns, and quirky accessories. (like the wizard costume you see Dylan Brady wearing).

One thing to note about 100 Gecs concerts is that their fanbase tends to be on the younger side. The duo’s music has gained a lot of popularity among Gen Z listeners, and their shows are often filled with teenagers and young adults. Despite their relatively short time in the music industry, 100 Gecs has already gained a dedicated fanbase. After chatting with multiple people before the show started, they all said this was their first time seeing 100 Gecs. After looking into it, the last time the Gecs were here was in 2020 at The Fine Line. It’s crazy how big the band has gotten to play at The Armory 3 years later.
